The RX-A5 was Panasonic's replacement for the RX-A2. They replaced the two 8-inch woofers with four 5-inch woofers and four passives.

Panasonic RX-A5

I believe this model is from 1983. In Japan it was branded National instead of Panasonic. It certainly makes a strong visual statement, with a total of 10 speakers. 6 of them are active (the 4 outer woofers and the 2 tweeters), while the inner 4 woofers are actually passive radiators. It's basically an updated version of the Panasonic RX-6400, with dual decks instead of just one. And unlike the RX-6400, it can be carried with only one hand, because it folds up into one piece instead of two. It's unlikely you'd be carrying it very often though, because it weighs 34.5 pounds, and that's without batteries!

Inside, it's tightly-packed. All the components are mounted to the front panel, and you have to remove one by one.

Here are the specifications:

The amplifier consists of a pair of AN7158N chips. Panasonic says the output is 15 watts per channel, but we don't know whether that was measured on AC or DC operation. Most old portables like this made more power on AC. Regardless, it's definitely one of the top 10 loudest portables from the 1980s. The sound quality is clear and precise, but the bass isn't very warm or deep. Most people say the Panasonic RX-6400 has better bass.
